The Childless couple

Struggling for so many years as a childless couple, Rehaan was the apple of our eyes. I still remember how he came into our lives as a five year old and how colourful our life became with his vivacity and cute tantrums. We never thought that we could feel so much connection with a child we had adopted, but as they say, all good things come to an end and so did ours.

One fine Sunday evening two years after his adoption, we found ourselves drugged and looted of all our wealth along with our son. We panicked that our son had been kidnapped, got a police complaint registered; I still remember how distraught I was at the thought of losing my son.

But look at the folly of our fate that we had been drugged by our son who we loved so dearly.

I couldn’t believe my ears when the police said that we have been victimized by an adoption racket that my child, that my Rehaan was a part of and who was constantly in touch with his real parents or whoever they were.

The dirty racket which plays with the emotions of childless couples like us and looting them not only of their wealth but also our capability of trusting somebody again.

What else can you expect in a country full of cons but another con like this !!

This post is written for the Write Tribe Festival of Words – Day 1. The prompt was to come up with a 9 sentence fiction.

  4. Arey yar ! It's the betrayal of trust, hope and love that the couple bestowed on the child , that actually matters, more than the money. Just a reminder to ourselves that danger might lurk anywhere.
Adoption rackets ! My god !!
    Well spun narrative, dearie.

  5. Oh my God, that is cruel. But I really hope that this does not happen in real, I hope the adoption agencies have more legal processes and verification put in the adoption policies.

    1. Prasanna, there are adoption rackets in India where such illegal agencies kidnap children and then they are sold (read: sent for adoption) to other countries as well. I just added some fictional angle to it !!

  9. That twist part was totally unexpected.
Kinda really sad , but ya sooner they got to know the true intention of their adopted son. If it would have been later , then that would hurt even more.

  10. A really unique and good take, Jyotsna. That's so sad how racket plays with human emotions and such kinda things can only make people cold at the thought of adopting a child.

    1. And the fact that we have so many of such rackets going on at this very moment actually scares me !! Adopting a child can be a very emotional decision for parents and its so sad that some people have found ways to play even with that :(

    1. This is not a real story completely. Adoption rackets do exist. But, since the theme asked us to write a fictional tale, I added a bit of my own. But, at the same time, I really do not know if something of what I have written also has actually happened or not.

    1. Richa, there are adoption rackets happening in India. Though I am not very sure of the part that I have added i.e. what happens after the child gets adopted.... But yes, I have read about the children being kidnapped and sold to foreign countries :(
