Loving Life Again

a question thrown in
my answer had me thinking
asked somebody just like that
how are you?
I am fine was my reply
didn’t know if it was actually true !!

went through the darkness and doom
after breaking up with you
days and nights were nothing but blue
darkness asked me one day
how are you?
I am fine was my reply
didn’t know if it was actually true !!

 courage I lacked
to hold a new hand
or find another shoulder to depend
dreading the addiction that last time happened
courage asked me one day
how are you?
I am fine was my reply
didn’t know if it was actually true !!

with efforts
tried to be up on my feet
leaving behind my precious relationship’s defeat
following hope
sunshine and its fleet
the sunshine asked me one day
how are you?
I am fine was my reply
didn’t know if it was actually true !!

with baby steps
I walked in the direction of light
using my gut, my strength,
my soul’s entire might
with fear in mind, yet faith in heart
again to give life, one hard fight
light asked me one day
how are you?
I am fine was my reply
didn’t know if it was actually true !!

 meekly, I would myself ask
what do you desire today?
and my heart would in its softer voice say
a new book to read
get a new song to hum
keep those negative thoughts at bay
and I would follow these little commands
the heart asked me one day
how are you?
I am fine was my reply
didn’t know if it was actually true !!

 as days turn into months
and months roll into years
I cover a distance today
beginning to heal
I feel life again getting on the reel
life asked me one day
how are you
I am fine was my reply
but this time
may be
may be
it’s true!!

  3. :) how often do we lie when asked how we are. I wish we could say everything out loud, without another person judging us. Gasping out how can you say that or how can you not be over him or her. Etc etc. Why do we hide pain so easily?

    1. May be because we fear being judged Sabeeha. We are engineered in that way. Sigh !

  5. OMG- what a beautiful read.. I feel her sadness coming out of your words, and the easy "i am fine" - when you are nothing but fine!! Loved her hope in the end.

  7. Beautiful piece Jyotsna! This is true for most of us...we always convince people around us that we are ok...but in reality we are not.Yet it feels good to know that in the end everything does get ok!

    1. Thanks a lot Vinodini. May be the reply 'I am fine' is a sub-conscious reply that we give whenever we are asked this question. Yes, in the end everything does get fine :)

  8. Heartbreaks can be very tough. And these verses help us to bring out our true emotions. Good one!

  9. M speechless Jyotsna at this brilliant poem straight from the heart. The heart only knows the hidden emotions and no matter how painful break ups are, we do get up and start loving life again:)

  15. Wonderful!! I enjoyed reading this so much, it took me on a little journey of memories and moments as I read and then I had to think about all the millions of times I respond, "fine" just to be done. Thanks for this!

  18. This is one of your best that I have read ... superb :-)

By the way, I just noticed that the first stanza had 6 lines, the second had 7, the 3rd 8 and so on ... is this a form of poetry? Seems really innovative :-)

    1. Thanks a lot Amrit. Well, glad you noticed about the lines in each stanza. This isn't a form of poetry that I have read about before, just that I went with the flow and got something like this :)
